Which stone should I choose for a countertop?
Which stone should I choose for a countertop?
Granite, quartz, quartzite or marble.
Granite, quartz, quartzite and marble are the stones most commonly used as base materials for countertops. They are very solid, non-porous (except marble) and easy to clean.
If you choose a granite countertop, darker colors are preferable to lighter ones, especially if ease of cleaning is important to you: darker granites are less porous than lighter ones. On the other hand, granite is a good solution if you want a choice of colors. You'll be able to choose an original color. Each slab is unique. Union Stone offers Consentino Sensa granite with a 15-year warranty.
On the other hand, if you choose a marble countertop, note that color variations are limited, due to the oxides present in marble and the fact that this stone is more porous. The qualities offered by these three stones are similar; it's the color and the desired finish that will make the difference. For your kitchen countertops, we suggest choosing between granite, quartzite and engineered quartz.
Our experts are available to explain the differences and the best choice for your kitchen countertop.
Should I choose quartz or granite for my countertop?
Should I choose quartz or granite for my countertop?
Here are a few tips to help you understand the differences between quartz and granite.
Granite
Granite is a 100% natural stone extracted directly from a quarry. Granite is then sliced with diamond saws to countertop widths of ¾ inch/20 mm or one and ¼ inch/30 mm, then polished with a diamond wheel.
Before polishing, an epoxy resin is applied to the surface to fill the granite's micro-cavities. A sealer is applied to this porous stone at the end of production, when the edges have been worked to the customer's taste. An additional coat is applied after installation.
Granite is a classic that has stood the test of time. Granite countertops are appreciated for their natural look, which creates random patterns, usually with visible veining.
At Union Stone, we advise our customers according to their needs, from the more classic (nero assoluto, giallo ornemental) to the more exotic (fantasy brown, super white). When choosing granite, you have to accept movement and natural imperfections such as veins.
Quartz
Quartz is quarried in crushed granules. These are combined with resin to form solid surfaces, synthetic quartz stones (in a proportion of 93% quartz and 3% resin), which are then transformed into countertops. Pigments used in the manufacture of countertops provide an infinite choice of colors.
Quartz will also be polished, then the edges will be engraved directly into the stone, but it won't require any sealant. Several finishes are available: polished, suede, volcano. There are different levels of quality. Union Stone offers only recognized brands of quartz to ensure the long-term satisfaction and health of our customers: Silestone, Caesarstone, Samsung, Hanstone.
Quartz's very fine grains and manufacturing processes give it a more uniform appearance than granite. It can be used to create homogeneous colors and original finishes. If you're looking for a more urban, modern look, quartz offers many possibilities for your kitchen and bathroom countertop.
